Hugo Pratt created the first Corto Maltese story, “The Ballad of the Salt Sea,” in 1967. Readers immediately realise that he is no ordinary comic book hero: Corto appears after the story has already begun, his wrists and ankles tied to a makeshift raft, entirely at the mercy of the sea.

It is immediately clear that, for the sailor with the earring, heroism does not mean winning, always overcoming every obstacle alone, bending the world to his will or imposing his own rules. Corto plays down the importance of both victory and defeat, while his personality and charm shine through.

He is a man of waiting, of missed encounters, of bets won but never collected, and of loves remembered with regret.

Corto Maltese’s composure comes from his culture, his travels around the world, his playful spirit and his willingness to let fate guide him.

What makes Corto Maltese so fascinating is his composure in the face of events, which he seems to observe more than shape. It is almost as though he understands what drives people and is therefore never surprised by what happens.

Corto Maltese is more than a comic book character. Over the years, he has become the archetype of the romantic adventurer. He embodies Pratt’s desire to pursue the fantastic world of adventure and embrace it with elegance, sensitivity and a wry smile.
