Roccagloriosa Archaeological Museum: A Journey into Lucanian Civilisation

Ancient monumental tomb in the Lucanian necropolis of Roccagloriosa, an important archaeological site in Cilento.

The Roccagloriosa Archaeological Museum tells the story of the ancient Lucanian civilisation through a valuable collection of artefacts discovered in the Cilento area. Located inside the town hall, the museum preserves important finds from the Central Complex and the monumental necropolis, dating mainly from the fourth and third centuries BC.

The site’s origins, however, are much older. The earliest traces of human presence date back to the second millennium BC, while a permanent settlement began to develop on Capitanali Hill in the fifth century BC. Roccagloriosa reached its greatest prosperity during the Lucanian period, becoming an important fortified settlement.

The remains of the imposing limestone walls, which extended for approximately 1.2 kilometres and protected the ancient settlement, can still be seen today. Beyond the walls lay the necropolises, where many of the artefacts displayed in the museum were discovered.

Arranged as a single exhibition route, the collection offers an insight into daily life, local traditions and the development of the settlement through pottery, everyday objects, grave goods and other archaeological finds. The artefacts also document the site’s continuous occupation into the late Roman imperial and medieval periods, providing a comprehensive overview of the area’s history.

A visit to the Roccagloriosa Archaeological Museum is a fascinating experience for anyone wishing to explore the history of Cilento and discover one of Campania’s lesser-known yet most captivating archaeological sites. It is an ideal destination during a stay at Villa Comics and can be combined with a visit to Velia, Paestum and the other historical treasures of the Cilento coast.
