Padula Charterhouse: Italy’s Largest Carthusian Monastery

The Padula Charterhouse, also known as the Charterhouse of San Lorenzo, is one of Campania’s most important monuments and one of Europe’s most spectacular Carthusian monasteries. Located in the heart of the Vallo di Diano, it was designated a

for its outstanding historical, artistic and architectural value.

Founded in 1306 by Tommaso Sanseverino, the Charterhouse was built on the site of an ancient monastery and dedicated to Saint Lawrence. According to tradition, the entire complex resembles the gridiron on which the saint was martyred. Over more than four centuries, the monastery was expanded to become one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe.

Covering more than 50,000 square metres and comprising over 320 rooms, the Charterhouse is an extraordinary example of Baroque architecture. It contains the world’s largest cloister, covering approximately 12,000 square metres and surrounded by 84 columns, as well as a magnificent spiral staircase in white marble leading to the historic library rooms.

The lives of the Carthusian monks revolved around prayer, silence and work. The complex therefore includes numerous spaces dedicated to their daily activities: the library, the richly decorated chapel, the large kitchens, the cellars with enormous barrels, the laundries and the vegetable gardens where food was grown to sustain the community.

One of the most curious stories associated with the Charterhouse is the famous legend of the thousand-egg omelette, prepared for Emperor Charles V during his journey through southern Italy.

Today, the Padula Charterhouse also houses the Archaeological Museum of Western Lucania, which preserves valuable artefacts from the necropolises of Sala Consilina and Padula. The museum traces the history of the area from prehistoric times to the Hellenistic period, taking visitors on a fascinating journey through thousands of years of civilisation.

Visiting the Padula Charterhouse means immersing yourself in a place where art, spirituality, history and archaeology exist in perfect harmony. It is an unmissable destination for anyone staying in Cilento who wishes to discover one of Campania’s most remarkable cultural treasures.
